Frank Lautenberg, the liberal Democratic Senator from New Jersey, died Monday June 3, 2013 at age 89.  He was in poor health for some time.  He died at a New York hospital suffering from complications of viral pneumonia.  In April 2013 he returned to the Senate to vote on several gun control votes favored by President Obama.  He was a multimillionaire businessman who was an accomplished politician.  He was a strong advocate of gun control.  He was the driving force behind the laws that banned smoking on most U.S. flights and made 21 the drinking age in all 50 states.  At age 89 he was the oldest person in the Senate and the last World War II veteran serving in the Senate.  He served in the Senate for nearly three decades in two stints.  He won the first time in 1982 in an upset victory over Republican Rep. Millicent Fenwick.  He won his last race in 2008.
