Texas Governor Rick Perry officially tossed his hat into the ring Saturday by declaring his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. There has been speculation for some time that Gov. Perry was attempting a run for the Presidency. This past Saturday, which was the day the Iowa Straw Poll was held on the campus of Iowa State University, Perry entered the race. Perry gave a speech at the Redstate Gathering of Conservative Activists in Charleston, South Carolina. Perry told South Carolina voters that he's ready for a showdown with President Obama.
It will be interesting to see what kind of difference Perry makes to the already crowded GOP lineup. Would a Perry candidacy likely split the conservative vote with Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann? It makes you wonder. I can recall in the 2008 presidential primary Mike Huckabee split the conservative vote with Mitt Romney. As a result it helped clear the way for a McCain primary victory. Only time will tell. I haven't studied very much about Governor Perry. I know that Joseph Farah, the founder of World Net Daily, apologized for his past support of Rick Perry because Perry told supporters at a GOProud event that if a state such as New York wants to legalize gay marriage, then that's their business as a state to do so. The problem with that is, as Farah pointed out, the Full Faith and Credit Clause. Since New York has legalized homosexual marriage, that would mean if a sodomite "couple" decide to move to South Carolina, for example, South Carolina would have to legally recognize the homosexual couple's status. That will create major problems. Another issue I'm concerned about is the fact that Rick Perrry supports the DREAM Act, which would grant "conditional" permanent residency to undocumented illegal alien students of moral character who meet certain requirements either at the military or an educational institution. I'm fearful this could lead down the road towards amnesty.
