President Obama Calls for Israel's Return to the Pre-1967 Borders

President Obama calls for Israel to return to pre-1967 borders

Benjamin Netanyahu says 1967 lines are indefensible

(USA Today May 20, 2011) President Obama on Thursday used the violent march toward "democracy" in the Middle East as a backdrop to unveil his plan between the Israelis and the Palestinians.  President Obama called for Israel's borders to mirror those borders that existed prior to the 1967 Six-Day War in June where Israeli gained territories as a means to defend itself.  The territories that Israel captured in 1967 were the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights, and the West Bank.  In a wide-ranging speech delivered six months after a series of uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa beginning with Tunisia, Obama also repeated demands that Syria's Bashar Assad and Libya's Moammar Gadhafi cease the violence against their citizens or face the inevitable end of their regimes.

At the State Department, President Obama stated, "We support a set of universal rights.  Those rights include free speech, the freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of religion, equality for men and women under the rule of law, and the right to choose your own leaders--whether you live in Baghdad or Damascus, Sanaa or Tehran."  In calling for talks between Israel and the Palestinians, Obama said the United States' "commitment to Israel's security is unshakable" and backed Palestinian demands for a new state based on borders that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War, which he called them "mutually agreed swaps" of land.  Since President Obama claims his commitment to Israel's security is unshakable, does that mean he'll send forces to protect Israel if they're attacked by Hamas, a terrorist group in Gaza or if Iran were to launch nuclear missiles against them?  If I were Israel I wouldn't want to count on the support of the United States given President Obama hasn't been a friend to Israel thus far.  Instead, President Obama has been friendly with the Muslim world in the Middle East.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stern rebuke to President Obama on the eve of his planned visit to the White House today.  He issued a statement calling the 1967 borders "indefensible" and stated a withdrawal from occupied territories would harm Israel's security.  It's troubling to see the direction the Obama administration has taken on behalf of Israel.  It's not in the best interests of Israel.  I will admit even previous presidents such as George W. Bush put a stranglehold on Israel concerning it's right to defend itself against the Palestinians.  Former president George W. Bush tried to push for a two-state solution creating a Palestinian State which would peacefully coexist side-by-side with Israel.  Israel and Palestine will never be able to exist peacefully living side-by-side in this present world.  There's too much enmity between the Jews and the Arabs.

Is President Obama going to tell Hamas to stop calling for the annihilation of Israel?  I doubt it.  Yet Hamas is in charge of Gaza which is next to Israel.  Israel faces terrorist attacks from Gaza quite often.  If Israel concedes its borders, it's security and sovereignty will be threatened.  Is Israel willing to surrender their territory and in turn face constant terrorist attacks from their enemies and not be able to defend itself?  Are they willing to surrender their sovereignty?  I highly doubt it, especially under Netanyahu.  America's best friend in the Middle East has been Israel.  Israel is the only nation in the Middle East that's the most peaceful and democratic.  It's scary.  Ezekiel chapters 37-39 mentions that God will cause a worldwide earthquake to destroy those nations that have turned against Israel.  The Bible says in Ezekiel 39:22 that the House of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God that day and forward.  God told Abraham in Genesis 12:3 that He would bless those that bless Israel and curse those that curse Israel.  I believe the judgment of God will be very harsh toward America whenever she abandons her ally in the Middle East.  It appears like that's about ready to happen.  I pray not.
