The Name of Jesus

"I Call Him Lord" The Rambos

"There's Something About that Name" The Gather Trio

(Isaiah 9:6, 7) "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.  The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this."

(Matthew 1:18-23) "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.  Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.  But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.  Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

Whenever we think of a name, it evokes a certain image, picture, or person in our mind.  Whenever we hear of prominent names such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, for example, we think of our founding fathers.  Other names such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, evoke images of ruthless dictators.  Other names such as D.L. Moody, Billy Sunday, and George Whitefield evoke images of past preachers in our mind.  Names have meaning.  We identify people through names.  When we think of someone's name, we think of certain characteristics of that particular individual.  Some names are laden with authority, such as President Barack Obama, the president of the United States or the name of a police officer.  A name is worth something.  Some names evoke images of positive thoughts and other names evoke images of negative thoughts.  The Bible says its important to have a good name.  Sometimes a name can be something positive and other times a name can be something negative.  It depends upon the kind of testimony that individual person has in public.

As much as I personally like my name, my name doesn't carry the power that the name of Jesus does.  There's no name on this earth that has the power to it as does the name of Jesus.  Isaiah 9:6 mentions that his name shall be called wonderful.  The Bible says the name of Jesus is the name above all names.  The name of Jesus has power.  When we pray, we are to end our prayers in the name of Jesus.  When I pray I end the prayer with, "And I pray this in the name of Jesus."  Why?  There's no other name that has power than the name of Jesus.  Acts 4:12 says, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men whereby we must be saved."  Notice the phrase "none other name".  Philippians 2:10-11 says, "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in Heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."  There will come a day at the Great White Throne Judgment that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.  It will be done at the name of Jesus.  That's for those who never have been saved.  All those that are saved have already bowed the knee and confessed that Jesus is Lord.  Everybody is going to bow to the Lord one day whether it be in salvation or at the Great White Throne Judgment.

Years ago during the 1960's if my memory is correct, the Gaither's wrote and sung a song entitled, "There's Something About That Name."  That's a powerful song.  What truth that is!  The name of Jesus has several meanings to it.  I'm going to conclude this post mentioning the different names of Jesus.  I found this list on the website and I'll list some of the names of Jesus.
